Sales of cars made by 2 local automakers account for 97.67% of Korea's minivan market in June

Minivans or multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) produced by two local automakers, Kia Motors Corp. and Ssangyong Motor Co., took a combined 97.67-percent share in South Korea’s minivan market in June, up from 95.3 percent a month earlier, industry data showed Monday.

According to the data, Kia sold 4,272 Carnival MPVs or 81.29 percent of the market in June, up 36 percent from the previous month, and Ssangyong's Korando Turismo sold 861 units or 16.38 percent last month, down 18.3 percent from a month earlier.

On the other hand, sales of foreign-made minivans, such as Toyota Motor’s Sienna, Honda Motor’s Odyssey, Chrysler’s Grand Voyager and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, totaled 122 units or 2.32 percent of the total sales in June, up 72 percent from May.

In June, sales of minivans or MPVs in the country reached 5,255 units, up 23 percent from a month earlier.
