Prosecutors, investigating the sinking of a ferry with 476 passengers and crew on board on April 16, raided offices of Cheonghaejin Marine, operator of the ferry Sewol, and its affiliates on Wednesday.

Also raided were the house of Yoo Byung-eun, the company’s owner, and offices of religious groups believed to be related to the owner family.

Of those on board, including 325 high school students, 174 were rescued. The death toll rose to 150 as of Wednesday afternoon, with 152 still missing.

An investigator said the raid is aimed at “looking into the overall management of the operator of the ill-fated ferry and its affiliates.”

On Tuesday, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) launched a probe into possible illegal foreign exchange transactions by the ferry operator, its affiliates and the owner family, including Yoo and his two sons.

The FSS is also investigating their possible illegal activities in purchasing overseas assets, an official said.
