K-pop stars Thursday canceled or postponed most of their promotional activities to express condolences to the victims of a ferry that sank off South Korea's southwestern coast.

Girl group Air Pink canceled plans to hold a fan meeting to mark the third anniversary of its debut. The event was originally scheduled to take place at Kwangwoon University in Nowon-gu, northeastern Seoul, April 19.

Its management agency, A Cube Entertainment, said: “Air Pink cannot sing and meet fans at a time when the entire nation is in deep grief.”

Boy group EXO followed suit, postponing its plan to hold a media interview originally scheduled for April 17.

Another boy group Block B put off the release of its new single “Jack Pot,” saying: “We sincerely hope that all of the missing people will return to their beloved families safely.”

Of 475 people on board the ill-fated ferry, nine were killed and 179 others were rescued, according to the authorities. The fate of the remaining 287 people, mostly high school students, were unknown.

Broadcasters, including television networks also said it would be inappropriate to air show or entertainment programs amid the tragedy, one of the most tragic incidents in South Korean history.
